The Best Items in Act 1 Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3
Luminous Armour
Luminous Armour lets the caster create a Radiant Shockwave when dealing Radiant damage. This can be great for example for clerics casting that one guiding bolt spell. This fine chest can be obtained when first entering the Underdark through the Selunite outpost. You need to pass a Perception DC 15 check on a fake wall, then disarm the trapped chest and find it within. On my playthrough there was a disarm trap kit in a box nearby in the same room. If you don’t pass the perception or otherwise need another method, you can Misty Step, for example using the Misty Step Amulet obtained on the way down here in Princess Gut’s room. It also provides armour class of 15 which is 2 higher than Shadowheart’s base armor which is nice.
Phalar Aluve
Phalar Aluve. A certain sword that must be pulled out of a stone. After first entering Underdark from Selunite Outpost, turn left and walk over to this at X:111 Y:-189. You can use a strong character to pass a strength (DC 15) check or one with high intelligence to pass the religion (DC 10) check.
Starting the buff takes an action so it’s ideal to enter turn-based mode and start it right before combat begins. There are two different versions of buff:
Sing: Allies have 1d4 bonus to attack rolls and certain saving throws.
Shriek: Enemies take extra 1-4 thunder damage and have penalty to certain saving throws.
Boots of Speed
The Boots of Speed are quite handy for using bonus action dash to get around especially for a melee class. Get them from the gnome Thulla in the Ebonlake Grotto (mushroom village), give her an antidote or potion of sylvanus.
Melf's First Staff
Melf's First Staff is nice. It can be bought from Blurg in the Myconid Colony in the Underdark.
Psychic Spark
Psychic Spark is nice for getting an extra dart with magic missile, and a free cast, especially for any caster optimizing for this type of multiple small hit damage. Also handy for the hag even otherwise, or interrupting spell concentration. It can also be bought from Blurg in the Myconid Colony in the Underdark
Caustic Band
Caustic band adds 2 extra acid damage to each weapon attack, which may not seem like a huge amount but it adds up especially for a character with multiple attacks such as a swords bard. It can be purchased from the vendor Derryth Bonecloak in the Myconid Colony.
Club of Hill Giant Strength
The Club of Hill Giant Strength is a great off-hand weapon to increase strength, pairs nicely with Tianstring Bow and for any other strength benefits. This can be found in the Arcane Tower in the Underdark.
To explore the tower:
Use invisibility on someone with lockpick or mini form, run past the laser towers, jump down the mushrooms along the side, grab a antimagic flower, pick the lock, place the flower to activate the elevator.
Go up to first floor greenhouse. Grab book “Threadbear” on shelf with supply pack. Also grab mushrooms for Omeluum (Tongue of madness and Timmosk spores).
Go up twice to get to third floor bedroom. Grab book “The Roads to Darkness” on corner desk at X:-28 Y:-295, and ring Mage’s friend in chest near bed.
Top floor, talk to robot.
‘Or art though friend, a rescue from my lonely wake?’
‘How can I trust? How will I ever know? / How can I show myself, my darkest me?"‘
Find stool at X:-22, Y:-272. Break stool for Club of Hill Giant Strength.
Optional basement via guiding ring for Staff of Arcane Blessings.
Bow of the Banshee
Bow of the Banshee is a really nice bow for inflicting the Frightened effect. It can be looted from Corsair Greymoon in Grymforge (don’t push him off the boat beforehand), or purchased from him if you’re so inclined. The Frigthened affect prevents enemies from moving so they can’t run up and hit you which is nice and for certain enemies with only melee attacks completely devastating. It also gives them Disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls. Still, Titanstring bow is probably higher damage output especially if using strength club or elixirs, but the utility here, and/or if someone else is already using Titanstring, makes it worth consideration.
Jorgoral's Greatsword
Jorgoral's Greatsword is a nice 2-handed sword. By the point in the game there are other good alternatives also available such as Soulbreaker Greatsword or Unseen Menace, but this one has a nice weapon action and is definitely a reasonable option. The weapon action “Colossal Onslaught” deal damages in a line AOE ahead and recharges on short rest. This sword can be looted from Corsair Greymoon in Grymforge (don’t push him off the boat beforehand), or purchased from him.
Disintegrating Night Walkers
Disintegrating Night Walkers are one of the best boots in the game, allowing the character to cast Misty Step and thereby teleport, which recharges on short rest. The boots also prevent several movement-impairing effects. They can be looted from Nere in Grymforge.
The Protecty Sparkswall
The Protecty Sparkswall gives +1 bonus to Spell Save DC, helping to land spells that make a saving throw such as Command, Sacred Flame, Toll of the Dead (note those are different from spell attack rolls which this does not affect). It can also synergize with other lightning gear such as the staff from saving the lady from the fire from earlier. Also looks pretty spiffy.
This robe can be found in a chest at the end of the trapped bridge behind the locked door. If you’re struggling with the bridge traps like I did at first, try not trigging any of them not going into turn based mode. Just go slow and steady one by one and disarm them. Ungroup the leading dex character to do this. If fail perception check, bring other characters up to help perceive the traps. Once you know where they triggering plates are, atlernatively you could just jump over each. Just be careful not to trigger then you enter turn based mode full of fire and it’s dicey.
Adamantine Sheild and Adamantine Splint Armour
There are multiple mould options to choose from by these are the best IMHO, the shield and heavy armour. They can be obtained from the Adamantine Forge as follows:
First collect the Moulds:
The Shield Mould is a on a skeleton at X:-555 Y:409.
The Splint Mould (Heavy) is sitting on the rocks at X:-590 Y:309
Grab the Mithril ore from the veins at:
X:-645 Y: 252
X:-557 Y:280
Destroy the Robot
Leave 3 party members up on the ledge, go down with 1 member to activate forge and lava.
Misty step back up onto ledge.
Use minor illusion to lure him onto anvil.
Use bows/arrows to activate forge and crush him.
